## Caption

The Devil is in the Detail 😈: Harry Emanuel was a jewellery retailer of London’s New Bond Street active during the second half of the 19th century, specialising in diamonds, fine jewellery, objects of vertu and silverware. As well as appearing at the International Exhibition of 1862 and the Paris Exhibition of 1867, he was bestowed the title of gold and silversmith to Queen Victoria and her son and future king, Edward VII. 
Circa 1850, he created this playfully dark timepiece, replacing the numerals with satanic motifs. Visible are symbols of a vulture, bat, cauldron, monkey, satyr and a witch, alongside depictions of satanic rituals. These motifs surround a central figure in a top hat with blue steeled hands in the form of a devil’s tail and pitchfork. 
Contrasting the monochromatic enamel dial is a gold case set with vibrant triangular shaped turquoise, which frames a diamond-set monogram with black enamel and decorative scrolls. This unique pocketwatch comes from the Masterworks of Time collection, and will be offered in the George Daniels, Visionary sale on July 2 in London.
