LDN - Let's talk about #JorisLaarman's 'Bone Chair', 2006. Made by way of a computer algorithm designed to simulate natural growth structures, the bone chair sits right at the intersection of design, technology, and science. Determining the position of the seat, which would be the flat surfaces, and where the chair would meet the ground, #Laarman then left the rest up to the computer, only intervening once more to smooth the shape of the simulation - in a fairly #scifi reinterpretation of the question of authorship in design in the 21st century. After the computer generates the design, and the designer refines it, a cast is made, and that is then hand polished (returning it once more to the traditional realm of craft). All in all, it's a fascinating result: as #JanaScholze puts it, a 'highly aesthetic object, deriving from the application of mathematical principles aimed at economy of design - while not compromising on function'. Cool. It's #OnView at #PhillipsBSQ just a little bit longer, before it goes under the (comparatively very old-school) auction hammer tonight.
