The Walking Dead joined forces with Deloitte, DoorDash, Ring, and Autodesk for a deadly collection of commercials aired during The Walking Dead finale. Cinematographer nickmahar shares an inside look into the thought process and the making of while shooting on the RED #VRAPTORXL #VRAPTOR and #GEMINI5K

“We had less than a week to prep, shoot, and give the post team only 2 days to finish 4 commercials which ended up being 5. We had some heavier VFX in one spot so everything needed to be well thought out and prepped to make it a smooth process. Lastly, we wanted to shoot Anamorphic for some of the characteristics. To make sure we captured all of the lens glory we shot on the RED VRAPTOR XL & VRAPTOR VV Sensors. It allowed us to shoot in 7k 6:5 2x Anamorphic. Finally having built-in ND with the VRAPTOR XL body was a dream that I’ve been wanting with my RED for years. Especially when I used to shoot doc work.

We had a total of 3 commercials for 3 different brands to shoot in one day. Additionally, we ended up shooting a 4th that was added during the day. The entire team is always on their A-game and ready for whatever gets thrown at us. The sets were basically ready to go besides some minor lighting tweaks when we arrived that day because we had a pre-light. Everything went smoothly and we flew through the shot list. Generally, we shot 2 cameras for everything but if we only did 1 the VRAPTOR XL was our go-to. Adjusting exposure with the built-in ND made it so we had no lag when adjusting angles. We also wouldn’t have been able to crush through so much without my amazing team.
