The great migration. The largest and longest land migration on earth. One would think such a large movement of animals was created through the vestiges of time, however this phenomenon only started around the 1960s. The Mara and Serengeti areas were once vast grasslands dominated by lions, elephant and the deplorable tsetse fly. The latter kept most of the cattle herding tribes of the region away from the area. However with the arrival of hunters in the 1800s thousands of predators were hunted near to extinction. This left a large void in the balance of the ecosystem. Later in 1889 Rinderpest (a cattle sickness) killed off 95% of ruminants on the continent. This further left a void in the ecosystem. With the predator populations depleted and other ruminants numbers low, the wildebeest were able to grow unhindered. By 1960 their numbers had reached into the millions. Grasslands no longer able to sustain such numbers drove the wildebeest to move in search of food. Now some 200 years after the decimation of an entire ecosystem we have the great wildebeest migration. If you think your actions don’t shape the world around you in some shape or form you are greatly wrong.
