📸: maxwelhohn // Clouds of western toad tadpoles swarmed around mitty maxwelhohn  and me like thick, black smoke as we gently drifted through the still waters of a crystal clear lake on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. We had been searching for fresh sealegacy content amidst COVID-19 travel restrictions, and finally found it here. The experience was extraordinary – I could rarely see my camera’s viewfinder but kept shooting, attempting to tame the visual chaos. As I emerged from the water, I heard the chatter of nearby campers and wondered if they had any idea of the incredible event taking place just meters from their crackling fire pits. The thin, molecular curtain we call the ‘surface’ is truly a gateway to another world that, despite the appearance of being saturated with life, is fragile and vulnerable. Of these millions of tadpoles, few will survive the many pressures we humans put on them. From the roads that criss-cross their habitat to the industrial chemical fertilizers and other contaminants introduced into their forests, we have driven western toad populations into decline, and they are now, sadly, listed as a ‘near threatened’ species.
