While out on adventures and exploring both locally and globally, it is important to be aware of your impact on nature and to try to keep your intrusion on natural habitats and wildlife to a minimum. If you’ve ever been on an Outdoors Pursuits trip, you’ve probably heard of “Leave No Trace,” from our leaders, the awesome initiative that teaches you how to enjoy the outdoors and #RecreateResponsibly without harming the environment or the creatures who call it home.

Over the next few weeks, we are going to be sharing the seven principles of LNT and talking to outdoor enthusiasts about how they have implemented LNT. The first tenant is Plan Ahead and Prepare.

Being spontaneous is great, but even when you are, make sure you go into your adventures with enough supplies and you have done enough research to be aware of the conditions you will be facing and aren’t left scrambling. Here are a few ways you can do this:

📒 Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you are visiting.
⚡️ Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and emergencies.
👣 Avoid high traffic times and areas where people are more likely to be depleting resources.
👨‍👩‍👦 Visit in small groups or break large groups up into smaller groups.
🍎 Repackage food to minimize waste.
🗺 Bring maps, GPS, or a compass to eliminate using paint, tagging, flags, or rocks.

 How else do you #LNT?
