Today is International #SportDay and we’re thrilled to be joining the @unitednations call for #ClimateAction! Sport can be a powerful tool for bringing people together, raising awareness, and addressing and mitigating climate change. Knowing how the ocean critically influences our atmosphere, and how a changing climate has serious consequences for our coasts and way of life, @wsl was an early @unitednations Sports for Climate Action signatory and is committed to uniting behind a set of environmental principles with @unclimatechange.

With this in mind, in 2019 WSL announced a series of sustainability commitments that set a new standard for global professional sports. These commitments - designed to inspire, educate and empower ocean lovers while addressing critical environmental issues included: becoming carbon neutral by offsetting events, business operations, and staff and athlete travel and focusing on overall emission reduction. In addition, @wsl committed to eliminating single serve plastics and investing in local communities through a grant program.

🌱 Since 2018, WSL has measured, reduced, and offset emissions from WSL Championship Tour, Big Wave Tour and WSL Operations. In total, we have offset 16,089 tonnes of CO2 emissions (mtCO2e) including 100% nature-based solutions which is equivalent to planting and growing 266,035 trees for 10 years (EPA).

🌱 We avoided the release of 1,022 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide through the use of clean energy, recycling, composting, biodiesel, and alternative transportation at all of our events.
 
🌱 Through all of our combined efforts to streamline staff travel, support local vendors, support renewable energy, and increase waste diversion, we have reduced our total emissions by 49% compared to our baseline year (2018).

We have more work to do, but are continually inspired by the great leadership from other participants in the Sports for Climate Action Framework, our #weareoneocean coalition partners, and our WSL PURE grantees.
