#GenesisPartner In celebration of Women’s History Month, I’d like to tell you a little bit about my maternal grandmother. One of the things that always stood out to me about her was how she was both terrifying and super sensitive at the same time. She would do things like take a bus all the way from the city without knowing how to speak or read English and somehow end up on our suburban doorstep (a mere 35 miles away) to work on our backyard-which she of course turned into a mini farm. She seemed equally impervious to dirt, grime, scalding hot water, and loved calling BS on her kids and grandkids (she often swore in Korean), the most important no-BS moment being when she told my mom that her failure to take me to the hospital would end up killing me.
.
But at night, my grandmother would cry in her sleep. When my grandfather passed away, she wept openly in front of all of us. And when she was really sick, she wouldn’t let go of my hand.
.
My grandmother taught me many lessons, but perhaps the most profound of all of them was this: women do not need to be ashamed of their tears. They do not need to hide their pain. They do not need to harden their hearts.
.
Toughness can coexist with tenderness, and vulnerability can stand side by side with strength.
