The accompanying music is an excerpt from Kelly Tang's Symphonic Suite, which features a medley of Singapore songs including everyone's favourite Home by Dick Lee.
#DidYouKnow that while Symphonic Suite is as Singaporean as they get, the piece has travelled around the world and been performed by orchestras from other countries too?
Symphonic Suite on a Set of Local Tunes (the full name of the piece) was commissioned by the National Trades Union Congress for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra's May Day performance at the #Esplanade Concert Hall in 2004. Since that premiere 11 years ago by the SSO, Symphonic Suite has been to Italy, Germany, and Thailand, and has been performed by orchestras such as the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra, and our very own Singapore National Youth Orchestra. And of course, Symphonic Suite returned to our shores last week, reaching people all around Fullerton Hotel and Marina Bay for Singapore's #SG50 celebrations.
