NFL GOLDEN LIONS TO BEGIN SEASONS SUNDAY

Former University of Arkansas At Pine Bluff football standouts Jamie Gillan and Terron Armstead are set to begin the National Football League season this weekend.

On Sunday, Gillan and the Cleveland Browns will play at the Baltimore Ravens at Noon on CBS, while Armstead and the New Orleans Saints will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 3:25 p.m. on FOX.

Gillan enters his second season in the league after a stellar rookie season in 2019 in which he ranked 12th in the NFL in punting at 46.2 yards per punt. Gillan made the team as an undrafted rookie free agent last season and was not challenged for his position heading into 2020.

The Browns (6-10) were one of only two teams to defeat Baltimore in the regular season last year. The Ravens (14-2) posted the best record in the NFL a year ago, as QB Lamar Jackson won NFL MVP honors.

Armstead and the Saints will look to win their fourth consecutive NFC South Division title this season. Despite a 13-3 record a season ago, New Orleans was eliminated in the playoffs in overtime for the second straight year at home against Minnesota. A two-time Pro Bowler, Armstead will anchor the offensive line at left tackle in his eighth NFL season for the Saints, seeking their first Super Bowl appearance since 2009.

Despite winning the division each of the last three years, New Orleans has been unable to get back to the league’s championship game. Looking to overcome an unfortunate stretch of losing on the final play in three straight playoffs, two of them at home in overtime, Armstead echoed QB Drew Brees’ statement of ‘Super Bowl or bust.’

"I said it. I'm standing on it for sure,” Armstead said earlier this week. “What else are we playing for? That's it, that's the only goal." That's the only goal especially for, you know, a team that really feels like we can do it. It's a real goal for us and that's it. It's the ultimate goal.

The Saints will face a popular pick for the Super Bowl in a reloaded Bucs team (7-9) that signed six-time Super Bowl-winning QB Tom Brady, while luring Brady’s teammate and three-time Super Bowl winner TE Rob Gronkowski out of retirement.
