Agustin Canapino is maybe the weirdest rookie in modern Indycar. Born in 1990, in Arrecifes, Argentina, he started racing quite late, with a Renault Megane in a local one-make series.

He won the championship in 2007 and that same year moved to TC 2000, one of the big four Argentinian championships. In 2008, he joined another of them: Top Race, while competing also in TC Pista to build his way to the Turismo Carretera, the most important Argentinian championship.
He got there almost immediately and showed his talent nationwide, he became champion in 2010, the same year that he won Top Race.

Between 2011 and 2017 he won all the titles in Top Race, except for 2015. Meanwhile, sticking to his goal to race two championships a year, he also won the Súper TC 2000 in 2016 with the Chevrolet factory team. Then he went on to win three other titles in Turismo Carretera between 2017 and 2019 racing for his father’s team. He also attempted a few races at Stock Car Brasil.
In 2019 he also got the opportunity to drive in the Daytona 24 hours with a Cadillac DPi, racing for Juncos Racing. He finished eighth in the class, and then he also raced at Sebring.

Canapino was awarded the Olimpia de Oro 2018 for the best Argentine sportsman of the year. Only Juan Manuel Fangio won this award as a racing driver before him.

Sadly, his father, Alberto Canapino, died from COVID in 2021. Canapino won the subsequent Carretera race and dedicated the win to his father.

In October of 2022, Juncos Racing announced that Canapino would take part in 2 demonstration runs in Argentina with an Indycar. After the runs and some testing at Sebring, he has been confirmed as the second driver for Juncos in 2023, alongside Callum Ilott. That will be his first experience with open wheel racing.
