Last summer, in the middle of a working Saturday I had the pleasure of meeting Corrado Fabi and talking with him for a few minutes. A few moments but intense, it only took a few words for me to understand a lot about him and his approach to the world of racing. He is the younger brother of Teo Fabi, who boasts an influential career between Formula One, CART and IndyCar.

Both grow up in Valtellina, in an affluent family that sees his parents running a mine. Teo develops a great passion for sports in general from an early age, until in 1976 he is pushed into motorsport by his own brother. He gets noticed very quickly and in 1982 he is hired by Toleman, except that he does not obtain great results until he joins Benetton in 1986.

In 1983 he participates for the first time at the Indy 500 and gets a historic pole position, including a new track record and the title of the first European driver to achieve that result. Unfortunately, he is forced to retire after 47 laps of which 20 led. Teo competes in 7 more editions and in 1994 he is the protagonist of a great comeback that from 24th position takes him up to seventh. The following year, on his last appearance, he finishes eighth.

In those years the Italian also boasts 3 pole positions in Formula One, obtained respectively in Germany, Austria and Monza. Still in Zeltweg he also succeeds in getting on the podium for the first and only time. Finally, in 1991 he wins the world sportprototype championship with the revolutionary Jaguar XJR-14, having also achieved a podium in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the old XJR-12.

Corrado's career, however, is less rich in anecdotes. He wins the European Formula 2 championship in 1982 except for not getting results in the top category, while two years later he retires from racing following the death of his father to devote himself to the family business.
