If the Safety Car in Formula 1 has been introduced steadily in a relatively recent time, the Pace Car in the United States has a longer story, especially at the Indianapolis 500.

From 1911 to 1956, the pace car took the starting field on a single warm up lap. Then, at a prescribed speed, the pace car would pull off the track into the pits and allow the field to make a rolling start. Carl Graham Fisher, one of the founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, drove the pace car for several years.

After Fisher’s death, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway president, Tony Hulman, drove the pace car immediately after giving the starting command.

From 1957 to 1976, the starting procedure changed with the pace car leading the field for two warm up laps, this allowed the fans on the main stretch to see the entire field parade for once.

Since 1977, the format was changed to three warm up laps. The firs5 two are "parade laps" and the last one is the "pace lap". During the parade laps, several replica festival pace cars join the field, usually carrying celebrities and special guest drivers. 

The 1978 race was the first to feature multiple pace cars on the track during the parade lap. Since 2010, the IndyCar "two-seater" has also been at the front of the field, carrying a celebrity or a special guest.

In later years, many former racers drove the pace car in more recent years. A. J. Foyt, Dario Franchitti, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr., drove the pace car in the last 11 years. 

Since 2002, Chevrolet has an exclusive contract with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to provide the pace car and other official vehicles. 

Since 1936, the winner of the race has been awarded a pace car. In some years, the winner is actually presented with one of the official street-legal pace car replicas. 

Only six companies provided the official pace car since 1911, General Motors Company, provided it under many of their manufcaturers for 52 times.
