The Firestone 600 was the 14th round of the 2016 IndyCar Series season. The race was originally scheduled as the 9th round of the series and originally began in June.
Carlos Muñoz qualified first, followed by Dixon, who was trying to close the gap with Pagenaud for the title.

Muñoz kept the lead until the first round of pit stops came, around lap 35. Newgarden took the lead.
On lap 42 Daly and Newgarden were involved in a huge accident: Daly lost the control of his car, hit Newgarden and pushed the upside-down Newgarden’s car against the barrier. The accident resulted in a 30-lap caution, but the race never restarted since it was red flagged on lap 71 due to further heavy rainfall and then definitely suspended, with Hinchcliffe as leader ahead Hunter-Reay and Aleshin.

The event was rescheduled on August 27 and Hinchcliffe kept the lead for most time, with Castroneves, Rahal, Kanaan and Carpenter fighting for the second position.

The first round of pit stops came between lap 100 and lap 120 and the running order remained largely unchanged until the next round of pit stops, around lap 200.
On lap 213, Dixon had a contact with Carpenter, went into a spin and hit the wall, causing the second caution.

The race restarted at lap 220 with Carpenter ahead Hinchcliffe, but after 4 laps, the left rear tire on Carpenter's car went down, causing him to lose the control of his car and to hit the wall.
Immediately after the restart, Aleshin lost the control of his car and was bumped by Hawksworth, causing the fourth caution.
The final restart of the race came on lap 240 with Hinchcliffe, Rahal, Castroneves, Kanaan and Pagenaud in contention for the victory. Hinchcliffe was able to keep the lead until the final lap: at turn three, Rahal passed Hinchcliffe and won by 8 thousands of a second on him. Kanaan and Pagenaud arrived respectively third and fourth.

The finish between Rahal and Hinchcliffe was the closest finish in the history of Texas Motor Speedway and the fifth-closed in the history of IndyCar Series.
