The hybrid technology will be introduced for the first time in the NTT IndyCar Series from 2024. 

The debut of the 2.4 liter, twin-turbocharged V6 hybrid engines was delayed from 2023 to 2024, due to global supply chain issues.
This was not the first time the rollout of the new powertrains was delayed. 2021 was originally scheduled to be the maiden season, before a delay to 2022, in hopes to attract more engine suppliers, and then to 2023.
Until then, teams will continue to use the 2.2 liter V6 engines that have been used in the series since 2012.

What are the main characteristics of the next generation of IndyCar engines?

Firstly, the engine displacement will be increased from 2.2 to 2.4 L, along with an increase in the horsepower from 550–700 to 900 hp (410–522 to 671 kW).
In addition, a hybrid system will also be introduced. The hybrid technology will include a motor, inverter, and electric storage device that will create energy recovery from the braking system.
This translates to a major power supply and efficiency, but it is possible that the new engine will be even louder than the previous 2.2-liter V6s engine it replaces - which has been employed in the series since 2012.

The new engine has already been tested on March 2022, when both IndyCar manufacturers Chevrolet and Honda spent 3 days on the old Formula 1 layout of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
Despite weather issues, the three-day test allowed engineers to collect a good amount of data to continue the development of the 2.4-liter engine in preparation for the addition of the required IndyCar component (the engine was missing its energy recovery system because of supply-chain issues).
