This year the historic Laguna Seca track awards the 2022 NTT Indycar Series title; it’s the 17th consecutive time that the Astor Challenge Cup is decided at the last GP. 

The race saw a regular start, with Power maintaining the lead and rookie Ilott (still second after the race start) losing two positions to Rossi and O'Ward. Behind, however, Newgarden’s show is about to begin: last after a terrible qualifying, the American driver immediately overtakes 6 drivers in a few laps. 

The race flowed smoothly until lap 27, when an unexpected Alex Palou - the only one of the Ganassi's line up who seemed to be in fine form today - overtook Power for the lead and immediately began to gain an advantage on his rivals.

A turn of events came on lap 39 when Ilott's splendid weekend suddenly ended due to an engine issue, causing the first caution of the race.
At the restart, Newgarden redeemed himself for the mistake made in qualifying at the corckscrew, overtaking three rivals in four laps, O'ward, Rosenqvist and even fellow-rival Power, taking second place.

From that moment on, Newgarden tried everything to win the race, making one more stop than his rivals without the hassle of saving tyres and fuel. The tactic, however, did not pay off and Newgarden had to settle for the place of honour behind the Spaniard, Alex Palou, who eventually conquered his first win of the season. 

The biggest celebrations, however, are for the third placed Australian Will Power who, after the all-time pole position record achieved yesterday, conquered his second Indycar title (the first of which came in 2014). After some sadly historically inconstant seasons, Power (41 years old) redeems himself with a solid and frameable season; only one win but the satisfaction of 9 podiums. 
The title of rookie of the year went to Christian Lundgaard (fifth at the chequered flag). By a curious twist of fate, it is the winner of the last gp of the season who cedes the indycar sceptre to Power, at the end of another exciting season. The appointment is now postponed to 2023.
