Laguna Seca circuit lies on the hills of the Monterey Peninsula and is maybe the most famous and beloved American road course. 

The track is short: 3 and a half kilometers, but features some hard challenges.
The track is fast, but rather a rollercoaster as it follows the natural inclinations of the hills. The Andretti hairpin, the first non flat-out corner, is a double apex downhill, and many drivers either miss the braking point or the first apex. Turn 5, then, is a banked uphill corner, fast but hard to master. And then, at the top of the hill there’s the Corkscrew: a slow chicane with up to an 18% drop in elevation change, going down for a total of 18 meters while driving less than 100. 
Here Zanardi performed “The Pass” against Bryan Herta in 1996. And then Turn 9 and 10, fast but insidious, as the trajectory must be executed with extreme precision.

Before the construction of the circuit, local drivers used to race at Pebble Beach, on public roads. However, on safety concerns, in 1956, organizers broke the ground for a new track on a former US Army base.
The new course opened in 1957. The original layout skipped the current first sector, featuring a long left sweep and a chicane instead.

Sportscar racing has always been the main focus of Laguna Seca, which hosted also major events such as Indycars, Trans-Am, Formula 5000 and bikes. In 1988, owners built the new first sector to improve safety for bikes. The final three corners were also reprofiled for 1996, slightly extending the start-finish straight. extending the run-off for the final turns, and the space for paddock.
Further upgrades were made 10 years later when the track hosted MotoGP for the first time. National star Nicky Hayden won the race. For the occasion, the safety structure was completely revised and the surface was repaved. The course today hosts IndyCar and IMSA, MotoAmerica and many minor events.
The course is part of the Monterey County Parks Department since 1974. The area is a must-see for nature enthusiasts as well as racing fans.
