The penultimate qualification of this challenging championship is about to start, on a cloudy late morning at the Circuit of Portland. As the season is almost over, seven drivers are mathematically still fighting for the title, making this championship battle the tightest of the last twenty years, even though only 5 of them are realistically chasing it.
The fight for the pole position gets even more exciting as the start from the first place plays an important role to get a clean start for tomorrow’s race, especially at turn 1.

The first round goes undergo with the first group. After few minutes into the session, Colton Herta touches the guardrail at turn 1, which forces him to pit as he bent his steering wheel. As the time goes by, he is able to make one last attempt which qualifies him for the fast 12. Among the ones eliminated in this first run is the Andretti driver Romain Grosjean, who will start in 15th.

If the first round of group 1 didn’t present any relevant turns of events, on the other hand the second group saw the unexpected elimination of two of the title contenders: the Chip Ganassi’s drivers Dixon and Ericsson; meanwhile, Malukas and Lundgaard - who are still battling for the rookie award - both made it through.

The fast 12 ends with Newgarden that sets the fastest lap, followed by Lundgaard - who delivers an impressive attempt- together with the other two Penske drivers Power and McLaughlin, the Mexican driver O’Ward and the Spaniard Palou, who is the only Chip Ganassi’s driver left to fight for the pole position.

After a challenging last round of the session, it’s Mclaughlin who conquers the polesitter’s award: a notable effort, considering that he is mathematically still in the title battle. Newgarden qualifies behind the teammate, but will get a 6 place grid penalty which will drop him into 8th. Power, Lundgaard, Palou and O’ward complete the top 6.
