Now that the last oval race of the season in St. Louis has gone into the record books, it's time to take a look at the 2022 Oval King standings: an informal classification that rewards the driver who has collected the most points in the five oval runs of the 2022 NTT Indycar Series season. 

The podium of this retro-style competition - which winks back to when Indy was called IRL and ovals were its daily bread - presents some surprises, such as Newgarden having to settle for 'only' the bronze medal despite his incredible score of 3 wins in 5 GPs. He paid the price for a disappointing 13th place in the Indy 500 (a race that, amidst a thousand controversies, awards double points) but above all for the crash due to a suspension failure suffered in Iowa 2, which occurred moreover while he was firmly leading the race. 

The podium was completed by the drivers involved in the last two events mentioned. In the place of honour we find the Swedish ex-F1 driver Marcus Ericsson, thanks to his consistency despite having scored only one success throughout the season in the prestigious Indy 500, a triumph worth a career. 

Finally, the gold medal goes to Arrow McLaren's Mexican driver Pato O'Ward, who has only scored one win on ovals (Iowa 2) but has constantly joined the "high quarters" of the overall classification. It is therefore thanks to a mix of consistency and speed with his 226 points that he triumphed, by just two points over the Swede, in this peculiar classification.
