Moved up by 30 minutes due to a risk of showers, the 15th Grand Prix of the season, the last oval of 2022, kicks off with a regular start, with the 7 bigs of the standings holding solid positions in the top ten. Sensational start for Rosenqvist who makes moves from p26 to p13 in 2 laps. One to forget for VeeKay, who kisses the safer wall and he is then forced to retire due to mechanical issues.

The race gets spiced up in the second stint with Sato who takes the lead halfway through thanks to a strong undercut and Harvey who crashes into the safer wall at lap 145 causing the first caution of the race twisting again all the strategies. 

With the green flag waved, Newgarden and McLaughlin (respectively sixth and seventh) fly past thanks to a fresher compound compared to their opponents, conquering with few overtakes the first and the second place. At lap 217, after the last waltz of pit stops, there is another turn of events as heavy rain covers the track forcing the race direction to wave the red flag. The race positions freeze with McLaughlin, Newgarden, O’Ward, Power (poleman and race leader for the first half) and Malukas in the first 5 places.

After a long wait of 2 hours, the track finally dried out and the green flag is waved for one last time: as the race goes again undergo, Newgarden quickly overtakes his teammate McLaughlin and takes the lead, meanwhile Power losees some positions and ends up in sixth. Impressive last few laps by David Malukas who makes his way up from P5 to P2 and finishes on the podium in front of Scott McLaughlin. With the fifth victory of the season, Josef Newgarden is now 3 points away from the championship leader Will Power as the battle now becomes even tighter.
