World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, Illinois, is a story that should have ended some years ago… Or maybe not! Under new ownership the circuit is emerging with high-profile events.

The original dragstrip emerged in 1967, when Wayne Meinert developed the St. Louis Raceway Park. Four years later, it was enlarged and continued operations through
the 80s. Given the success, road racers asked for a local facility and in 1985 they got a new road course.
It hosted a variety of racing series, including Trans Am. A new name, Gateway International Raceway, was adopted in 1988.

In 1995, the facility was purchased by Chris Pook, who wanted a new oval course and a reworked dragstrip. Works began immediately and the tracks were completed
in 1997, featuring a roval too. The oval was unusually egg-shaped. CART Series went there almost immediately and one month later the NHRA raced on the new strip, gathering a remarkable success. In July, NASCAR Cup arrived and Elliott Sadler won the race. However, the track proved more suitable for NASCAR Trucks

In 2010 Dover Motorsports Inc., who purchased the facility, hosted two races at Gateway following the closure of Memphis. However, the events proved disappointing and the group announced that Gateway was officially closing.
A year later, retired race car driver Curtis Francois announced he had purchased the facility and would open it for the 2012 season. He started with NHRA: thewere back at the track in September 2012, with a successful event. NASCAR Trucks were arriving in 2014. The facility expanded again with a karting track and improved grandstands. IndyCar Series was returning for the 2017 season, and the circuit was fully repaved.

In 2019 World Wide Technology agreed to give the track a title sponsor, and an expansion to the roval was also developed for the 2019 season, creating a layout suitable also for drifters. From being shut down to hosting all the major American racing series: that’s how a good businessman achieves success, and that’s how Gateway found his way!
