The 14th qualifying of the season is disputed in the challenging street circuit of Nashville, Tennessee. The event, which is only at its second edition in history, was deeply affected by heavy rain and risk of lightning, which forced the organisers to postpone the start by 1.5 hours.

The start on a dry track is immediately affected by a red flag caused by Andretti team rookie Devlin DeFrancesco.
The second red flag came shortly after with another Andretti, Colton Herta, hitting the wall at turn 4. Among those eliminated in Group 1 was surprisingly Alexander Rossi, the third driver of the Andretti line up and winner of the last GP. Also among the eliminated was Simona De Silvestro, who’s now taking part to her third race of her season with the all-female team Paretta Autosport.

On the other hand, it was a smooth running for Group 2, with Power and McLaughlin dominating and Chip Ganassi's three drivers getting excluded, above all title contenders Ericsson (18th) and Dixon (14th).

The Fast12 sees Palou emerge, the last survivor of the Chip Ganassi drivers, together with McLaughlin, Grosjean, Newgarden, O'Ward and Lundgaard, the Danish rookie now used to occupying the first positions of the NTT IndyCar Series. The championship leader Will Power inserted in Fast6 is excluded after having gone wild, which leads the race direction to cancel his best time thus relegating him to eighth position.

In the last phase of qualifying, the fastest of the six survivors is Penske's New Zealander Scott McLaughlin who rules Grosjean and the young Lundgaard. For him it is the second pole position of the season after his debut in St. Petersburg, the only one so far this season to have managed to win starting from the first place on the grid. Closing the top six were Palou, O’Ward and the home driver Josef Newgarden. Tomorrow the 80 laps but above all the strategies and the yellow flags will decide the name of the winner of the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix.
