The Music City Grand Prix was initially announced in 2020 as a new IndyCar street circuit around a stadium and over a river. Precisely, the finish line lies near the Nissan Stadium, and the Korean Veteran's Memorial Bridge, driven in both directions over Cumberland River, takes most of the track.

Alongside IndyCar and Indy Lights, many championships, like Trans-Am and Stadium Super Trucks, use this circuit on the same weekend.

The event involves music too, given the presence in Nashville of the Big three record labels and the Gibson, a guitar manufacturer. Also, music legend Johnny Cash spent his last years there and the city hosts numerous dedicated museums and parks. Despite having three major racetracks, it looks like Nashville attracts music fans way more than racing ones.

The track was designed by street circuits master Tony Cotman. City officials were reluctant to allow use of that Bridge, considering the resulting designs to be too easy. The idea of the bridge looks very similar to what Formula 1 was looking for in Miami, before diverting the project elsewhere.

The start line is located on the Bridge as it’s wider and safer. The finish line and the pit area are located three corners later, in front of the stadium where spectators are allocated.

Before the first race, the streets went under resurfacing and widening, and some infrastructures were modified for safety. Cotman stated that surface grinding was required to get rid of some bumps, and this would require some time.

Following practice in 2021, after drivers’ complaints, organizers tried to pull out at least some surface grinding, but this proved almost uneffective. The race itself was full of incidents, with nine cautions and two red flags.

Leaving criticism behind, in the first edition Nashville experienced what every track experiences when opening, being imperfect and maybe needing some change. The event is going to improve for sure, as the city guarantees a strong will to keep IndyCar.
