Despite being the oldest active racetrack, Indianapolis features a road course only since 2000.

Tony George, the owner, began a programme of diversification in the 1990s. A new roval was built: a track that combines an oval and a road course, in this case driven the opposite way from the oval. The last turn was the banked one, then the track extended on the full finish straight up to a chicane and some medium-speed corners led to the second longest straight, ending with a sharp corner. So, two hairpins and a last turn to rejoin the oval. That same year, new garages and a new control tower were built to accommodate F1.

Michael Schumacher won the first F1 roval race, the first race ever to drive on the brickyard the opposite way. In 2002, that same Schumacher tried to stage a dead-heat finish, but leaving the win to his teammate Rubens Barrichello by mistake.

Then, in 2005, tyres suffering on the banking led the Michelin supplied teams to withdraw. The race took place anyway with just six cars. The event never recovered and was dropped after the 2007 edition. Indianapolis started looking for MotoGP. Modifications were made to the road course, which now runs anti-clockwise, same as the oval, but bypassing the banking with a slower section. The hairpins were also replaced with the Esses.

In 2012, Grand-Am came to Indianapolis as the support event for Brickyard 400. The course was the one run by Formula One, only with the Esses.

In 2014 Indianapolis entirely reimagined the programme in the month of May: now Indycars would race on the road course too. New modifications were made: the medium-speed section was replaced by a chicane, enlarging the backstraight, the Esses were smoothed and the last section was made easier for cars.
In November 2019 Roger Penske announced himself as the new owner of Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar. The facility has been sold to a true racing enthusiast, who guarantees Indianapolis the prestige it deserves, succeeding in organizing there the first joint weekend between Indycar and NASCAR.
