The streets of Toronto Exhibition Place once a year become the second most popular race in Canada, losing only to the F1 Canadian Grand Prix. Toronto has been a yearly venue since 1986, cancelled only in 2009, 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the race is coming back!

Proposals for a track in the west area of Toronto were analyzed in the mid-1970s, but never realized. After Montreal succeeded to host F1, the competition between the two cities convinced Toronto to build a racetrack. At the same time, IndyCar was abandoning the hated Sanair race track, and so Toronto was included in the schedule as a replacement. 

The track surrounds the Exhibition Centre. Despite being a street circuit, smooth roads and wide corners offer a flowing layout in a spectacular scenery. 
Actually that wasn’t the first track at the Exhibition Place: since 1952, the stadium hosted a paved oval, gathering some success and hosting a NASCAR race in 1958, where Richard Petty debuted and his father Lee Petty won. The track closed some years later.

On July 20, 1986, racing came back to Toronto. The first race was a success in front of a crowd of 60000, and Bobby Rahal won. CART, and later ChampCar, kept coming there yearly. 
In 1996, the course was modified for the first time, tightening the last turn to leave space for the newly built National Trade Centre. That year, a dramatic incident took the lives of Jeff Krosnoff and marshall Gary Avrin away. 

In 2008, after the reunification of Indycar and Champ Car, Toronto was dropped from the schedule. But it lasted only one year: Andretti-Green Racing organised and promoted the race again from there. 
Further changes to the track were due to the construction of a hotel. The pitlane, so, was moved back to the last three turns. Despite the paddock being now a bit far from the pitlane, the track is still loved, so much that Indycar would never drop it down.
