As you well know, one of the awards to be given at the end of the championship will go to the best rookie of the year. There are six drivers battling it out to excel in this special ranking, and today the fight seems to be anything but a foregone conclusion.

Currently leading the way is a Danish guy who is a product of the Alpine's academy, coming from F2. His name is Christian Lundgaard and today he races for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. He is in 17th place in the overall standings and has two top-10 finishes respectively at Indianapolis and Road America.

Trailing by 14 points is David Malukas, a Lithuanian driver with an American passport who races for Dayle Coyne Racing. He is Indy Lights 2021 vice-champion as well as fresh from a ninth-place finish in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio.

A little further back we find three other rookies separated by only 2 points. First is Devlin DeFrancesco, a Canadian driver driving for Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport, who boasts two 17th-place finishes at Alabama and Mid-Ohio as his best results. Right behind is A.J. Foyt Enterprises' Kyle Kirkwood, current Indy Lights 2021 champion and the only driver to have won in all three preparatory divisions, who today boasts a top-10 finish at Long Beach. Away by another point is Callum Ilott, the 2020 Formula 2 vice-champion who now races for Juncos Hollinger Racing. Perhaps the best performer among all of the above but unfortunately weighing in are 3 seasonal retirements, one of which (Indy 500) also forces him to miss a race due to injury.

Closing this standings is Tatiana Calderon, Kirkwood's teammate, also with a past in F3 and F2. Her best result this year is currently a 15th place finish at Indianapolis.
