Indycar went many times to Northern Canada, and precisely in Alberta, and most precisely in one specific city: Edmonton. The Edmonton Indy was a race held at a circuit in the Edmonton City Centre Airport. Racing in airports is quite common in North America, still today the St. Petersburg Grand Prix uses an airport as part of the track, but Edmonton was quite singular in its shape: fast and bending left to right continuously: not what you would expect from an airport. It was formerly a round of the Champ Car World Series, integrated into the 2008 IndyCar Series after the two series merged.

The inaugural race was held in 2005 and featured a title sponsor until 2010.
Octane Motorsports Events, promoter of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, took over as the new promoter in 2010. That same year, however, a taxiway that the racetrack featured was demolished, so a new layout had to be pulled out. In November, the City of Edmonton and the promoter failed to reach an agreement concerning pavement work to be done on runway 16 of the airport, where the race course was to be moved, so the event was cancelled. Indycar came back to Edmonton in 2011 on a new, longer and slower track. After two editions, in 2012, Octane Motorsports announced that no race was going to be organized for 2013 due to poor attendance and lack of support from locals. 

No other promoters stepped in, and so Indycar went away from Edmonton. That same airport has later been demolished and replaced with a newer one, in the southern downtown. The City of Edmonton actually features two racetracks active nowadays: the Castrol Raceway and the Edmonton International Raceway. Anyway, both are unable to host such an important event, and so, if the new airport doesn’t come out with a proposal, a comeback in Edmonton looks very unlikely.
