Mansell's move to America stemmed from the implosion of his negotiations with Williams for 1993. Discussions were held with team boss Frank Williams, who preferred to sign Prost. So, Paul Newman, owner of Newman-Haas, convinced Mansell to drive for his team in Indycar.

When he got behind the wheel of the car in testing, he quickly impressed the team. After his first oval experience, he was shocked about the g-loading.
On the streets of Surfers Paradise, the first championship race, he took pole and win easily.

Next stop was Phoenix for his first oval race, but in second practice he spun and hit the wall. That resulted in 148 stitches in his back and an obvious withdrawal
In the subsequent weeks, Indycar doctors Terry Trammell and Steve Olvey regularly had to drain fluid that had accumulated in Mansell's back, and his case history made US medical journals.

Thanks to painkillers and localised anaesthetic injections, he was able to race again in the very next event: Long Beach. Here he took the pole position again and finished third, with a still aching back.
Next came the month of May and Mansell's first experience of Indianapolis where he drove the minimum laps needed in practice and qualifying to avoid pain from the stitches. 

Somehow, thanks to his skill, he finished third again.
One week later he was back winning on the Milwaukee Mile, a bumpy and physical oval.
Then, mixed fortune for him: retired in Detroit, second at Portland, third at Cleveland, and then stopped with a mechanical problem in Toronto.
When the series then returned to the ovals, Mansell won again at the Michigan 500 and a week later at New Hampshire. After the accident in Phoenix, he won three time on ovals, and changed the way to drive an oval track, copied by the other drivers from the following season.

The final part of the season mirrored the first with mixed fortunes on road courses, and won the remaining oval event at Nazareth. With one race still to run, he secured the title. He won by pain, suffering and dedication, he won by talent where Europeans at the time rarely dared to go.
