The Andretti family has a long tradition of success in motorsport. Five family members successfully raced in the Indy 500, but among them, only Mario was able to succeed in the historical competition, in 1969. 

There is a peculiar expression that makes reference to the series of unfortunate events that has affected the members of the family throughout the years, the “Andretti’s curse”. Its origin dates back to 1970, when team owner Andy Granatelli had a major dispute with Mario Andretti's chief mechanic, Clint Brawner, who was fired. As a consequence, Brawner's wife is said to have cast a curse vowing that no Andretti would ever win at Indy again. That year, during the race, Mario encountered an issue both at the chassis and at the right rear suspension. Over the years, he suffered of 10 crashes and 14 mechanical failures.
 
The same fate befell the other members of the family. Michael Andretti had a very successful racing career that counts more than 30 wins in the category but could never pull out a win at the Indy 500.  He currently holds two records at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway: most completed laps without winning a race and leading the most laps without winning the race. During his experience at the Indy 500 he suffered of two crashes (1985, 1995) and six mechanical failures (1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 2003). 
 
Marco Andretti made his debut at the Indy 500 in 2006, at the age of 19, where he finished in second place in the second-closest finish in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway history, gaining the rookie award just like his father and his grandfather before him. In 2020, he took part to the Indy 500 conquering the first pole position for an Andretti driver since 1987. However, he immediately lost ground at the start of the race, finishing only 13th. For many, the missed victory left a negative impact on Marco's career, during which he scored 2 wins, 20 podiums, 6 poles and a 5th place in 2013 as his best championship result.
