On Friday before race day in Indianapolis occurs what is traditionally known as “Carburetion Day”, a final free practice to adjust the engines’ carburetors. Despite IndyCar having no carburetor in their mechanics since 1963, the tradition has been preserved throughout the years.

On Friday May 27th, the “Carb Day” was dominated by the American Legion Chip Ganassi Racing Honda of Tony Kanaan, at 227.114 mph, followed by his teammate Marcus Ericsson at 227.004 mph. Third came the Dale Coyne w. RWR car of the two-time Indy 500 winner Takuma Sato (226.839 mph), and then the PNC Bank Ganassi car of poleman Scott Dixon (226.696 mph). Among the “500” rookies, the fastest was Jimmie Johnson on the Carvana Chip Ganassi Racing car, seventh overall with 225.974 mph.

About the other top teams, 6th place was for Team Penske with the Verizon Chevrolet of Will Power (226.032 mp/h) and 9th place for Andretti Autosport with the KULR Honda of Marco Andretti (225.714 mp/h), who's looking to finally break the Andretti's Curse, which eluded every member of Andretti family since 1970.

Consistent run also for Arrow McLaren SP, with Pato O' Ward 8th (225.756 mp/h), Felix Rosenqvist 10th (225.665 mp/h) and Juan-Pablo Montoya 16th (225.364 mp/h). Big struggle for the front row sitter Rinus VeeKay, last in 33rd place (220.638 mp/h). Not an ideal day also for the 4 time-winner and defending Indy 500 champion Hélio Castroneves in 18th place (224.971 mp/h), as well as Romain Grosjean in 27th (223.130 mp/h); top runner Ed Carpenter closed the Carb Day in 31st place (222.307 mp/h) with only 23 laps completed. Two major crashes have also been reported during the practice, one for Colton Herta and the other for David Malukas, who spinned and made contact with Santino Ferrucci.

Another noteworthy news regards Newgarden’s win (the 18th for team Penske) of the Pit stop challenge over Dixon.
