## Caption

Opening the patrol of the seven rookies taking part in the 2022 Indianapolis 500 we find in the third row, ninth place, former Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean. The 2011 GP2 Series champion is currently undertaking his second season in Indycar, but this year he will compete on ovals as well, having now recovered from the consequences of the terrible accident he suffered in Bahrain in 2020. 
Three positions behind the French driver in the rookie standings we find another motorsport veteran: we are talking about 46-year-old Jimmie Johnson, seven times winner of the NASCAR title. In spite of the difficulties encountered on the road-courses, the American has always proved to be fast on the ovals. 
Right behind, 13th, is 20-year-old Lithuanian with U.S. passport David Malukas, vice champion of Indy Lights 2021, the so-called "F2 of Indycar." Six positions after him we find the 23-year-old Briton Callum Ilott, former talent of the prestigious Ferrari Drivers Academy and 2020 Formula 2 vice world champion, who will start 19th ahead of Italian-Canadian Devlin DeFrancesco and American Kyle Kirkwood, respectively 24th and 28th on the grid. The first one is the winner of the 2017 Spanish Formula 3 and sixth in the last Indy Lights, while the latter won the 2021 Indy Lights title thanks to a haul of 10 wins. 
Last of the rookies is Danish driver Christian Lundgaard, having spent three years of experience in Formula 2 and in the orbit of the Renault Sport Academy as well.

Only ten times out of 105 editions held so far has a rookie managed to impose himself on the most famous oval in the world: the last to succeed was Alexander Rossi in 2016, at the end of a heart-stopping last lap. Will there be surprises in the 106th edition too?
