In order to enjoy the weekend of the historical Indy 500, let’s give first a proper look to its symbols and traditions, which have made it one of motorsport’s milestones throughout the years.
 
1.  The race always takes place before the last Monday of May, the Memorial Day in the US, a day to commemorate the fallen among the American army. As a matter of fact, lots of national ceremonies are carried out throughout the weekend. 

2.  For long time, the Indy 500 was the only race to be held in the US in May. No other racing competitions were allowed, as to recognize the historical value of this race.
 
3.  The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the fastest circuit in the world, with also the highest capacity (135.000 spectators are to be expected this year).
 
4.  In the past, the track was composed by red bricks, before being covered with cement. Today, a small line of bricks (“Brickyard”) has been preserved at the finish line as a remembrance.
 
5.  The traditional starting call “Ladies and Gentlemen start your engines”, which declares the beginning of the race. The announcement has been changed from “Gentlemen start your engines” in 1977, when Janet Ghutrie qualified for the race.
 
6.  There is no champagne on the podium, but milk bottles. This tradition goes back to 1936, when Louis Meyer began drinking milk after the win in order to fight the heat. This tradition has been carried out uninterruptedly until 1993, when Emerson Fittipaldi drank a glass of orange juice.
 
7.  The trophy is six feet tall (1.60m) and weighs 110lbs (50kg), as it presents the effigies of all 105 past winners (repetitions included).

8. The Indy 500 is among the three iconic competitions - together with the 24h of Le Mans and the Grand Prix of Montecarlo - whose victory allows a driver to get the honorary title of the Triple Crown.
