London, 1908: 'Assisted winning' #50Days50Moments
In the lead as he entered #London's White City Stadium, Italian #runner Dorando Pietri proceeded to collapse five times in the final stretch of the 1908 Olympic Marathon. Dehydrated and exhausted due to the heat, #Pietri was eventually helped across the finish line by the doctors and officials. He was declared the winner but ultimately disqualified for receiving assistance.
