“I was on Twitter the other day, and I saw people were mad at LL Cool J. I looked on his account and saw he was saying some tone-deaf things about the anti police brutality protests. People asked him to expand on his points and he got defensive. I ended up tweeting at him, as well, and he offered to host a debate on Instagram Live. So I got on with him. He said he wanted our generation’s perspective about what’s going on right now and how I felt about the protests. I told him I was disappointed with how it’s being handled on both the state and federal level, as well as how the media is portraying it. I feel like they are showing a narrative that is not entirely true. I expressed that I feel that police officers should be expected to study the law to the same extent as lawyers do since they are the ones executing the laws. He agreed with that and brought up his concerns about looting. I argued that the soil of this country was looted and that human lives should be valued over the stock of a Target.

I’m really glad we did this. It ended up being very productive and educational. I got hundreds of messages and DMs afterwards from people telling me they learned something new about the movement and how the criminal justice system works. Interactions like this are really important. I think the best way to be a good ally is to listen and amplify the voices of Black people. Additionally, you should not be afraid to have hard conversations with your peers. And don’t be afraid to check and challenge people.

I want to encourage people reading this feature to donate to mutual aid funds for people protesting and to funds for Coronavirus relief. As a result of this protesting, I’m sure there will be another spike in cases, which will disproportionately affect the Black community.” -Imani Thompson ‘21 *After graduation, Imani plans to go to law school and study bioethics. She wants to advocate for people affected by medical malpractice and medical racism – issues that are very important to her.
