DID YOU KNOW... “Body Positivity" has become a buzzword that gets thrown around all over social media. But where did it come from? How is it changing?

“Body positivity originates from the fat acceptance movement from the 1960s,” says Chelsea Kronengold, from the National Eating Disorders Association. “The body positive movement was created by and for people in marginalized bodies, particularly fat, Black, queer, and disabled bodies.” The movement blew up around 2008 to 2010 among plus sized Black women and women of colour, opening conversations about their identity struggles on social media. 

Then around 2012, it was adopted by big brands and influencer culture...

Body positivity can be validating for anyone who struggles with self image, but in recent years it's become so commodified by businesses and influencers that we've lost sight of its radical origins. 

Some have opted to use the term "body neutrality" as an alternative to the commodified body positive movement. “Body positivity urges people to love their bodies no matter what they look like, whereas body neutrality focuses on what your body can do for you rather than what it looks like,” explains Kronengold. Body neutrality views your body as a functional vessel that helps you live life, which can be helpful if you're struggling with self-love.
