“In 2015, then-candidate Trump changed the game. It’s safe to assume that more people see his tweets than watch CNN, more people have attended his rallies than follow Brian Stelter on Twitter, and more people have watched his press conferences than watch The View. President Trump has broken through the traditional media outlets—communicating directly to the American people (or anyone he wants to reach) by instantly sending his messages over Twitter. The traditional media no longer controls the national narrative or the means by which their carefully curated reports are communicated—which means the media no longer controls the minds of their viewers, listeners, or readers. The landscape is rapidly changing thanks in large part to a commander in chief who is happy to pave the way. If President Trump wants to push back against any of the wild accusations of a power-starved media, all he needs to do is tweet, hold a rally, or live-stream a briefing, and his message will jump right over the legacy media’s gate. 

Very simply, candidate Trump disrupted the political institutions in this country, and President Trump has disrupted the media landscape. By disregarding the traditional avenues of presidential communication, President Trump is paving the way for a new era of how our elected officials communicate with us. Gone are the days of pandering to the media in the hopes of being thrown a positive headline or softball interview. Now the people expect their politicians to shoot straighter and walk taller than ever before. When they see President Trump out in front telling it like it is, they feel emboldened, they feel inspired, and most of all they see authenticity.”
