Born in 1914, Italian Gino Bartali was a professional cyclist who won the giroditalia three times and the Tour de France twice, all in the years immediately before and after World War II. That made him something of a national hero. During the war, he continued his training and, working with several networks, used those long rides to transport forged documents. Those papers helped save hundreds of Jews from persecution. While he sought no attention for his deeds, one of the survivors he aided heard his story first hand and passed it along.
.
After the war, many Jews fled to Israel. Today, as the Giro D’Italia starts outside of Europe for the first time in its 101 year history, they honor Gino with a Commemorative Citizenship Ceremony at the Yad Vashem World Holocaust Memorial Center in Jerusalem. The certificate was presented to Gino’s granddaughter Gioia Bartali.
.
Part of the celebration included a memorial ride by the israelicyclingacademy team, who will be the first Israeli team to compete in the Giro.
.
On the team are the first two Israeli riders to compete in any of the Grand Tours, 1guysagiv1 and guy_niv83 . They’re riding derosabikes Photon road bikes with sponsors like orangesealed fsa_road and visit_israel
