5 things that I wish I knew when I began powerlifting

1️⃣Prioritize technique: It’s tempting to add load to the bar initially as you become stronger, but it’s also important to do so with good technique. It becomes increasingly more challenging to unlearn established movement patterns rather than learn good techniques from the beginning.

2️⃣Progress Is Not Always Linear: Strength gains can come quickly in the beginning, but at some point, progression slows. Many lifters will become discouraged at this point. Remaining patient and having open and honest communication with your coach will be more effective than hopping on to another program.

3️⃣Recovery is as Important Just as Training: We often place a heavy emphasis on training, but recovery, including rest, nutrition, and stress management, is equally important, if not more important, in the long term. Inadequate recovery can lead to potential burnout or injury, hindering long-term progress.

4️⃣The Value of a Supportive Community: A supportive community that provides encouragement during challenging times and celebrates successes can make all the difference in staying committed when the motivation wanes

5️⃣Listen to Your Body: I genuinely wish I listened to my body when I started lifting. It likely would’ve prevented many unnecessary pains and injuries. Understanding the difference between typical pain (like muscle fatigue) and bad pain (signaling potential harm) can make or break a powerlifting career. The best lifters aren’t always the most genetically gifted; they have avoided any substantial injuries requiring significant time off. Listening to your body and adjusting training will ensure a long, sustainable lifting career.
