Strength training improves muscle strength and power through neuromuscular adaptations, muscle fiber type characteristics shifts, and muscle growth. The initial rapid increase in strength as individuals become familiar with the exercises is largely due to neural adaptations as the lifters become more familiar with the exercise. This is generally followed by a slower progression as muscle size increases and the lifter gains experience.

The differences in these adaptations mean that more experienced lifters need greater training variations than beginner lifters.

The neuromuscular adaptations help us get better at performing tasks through improved coordination and increased muscle activation. Newer lifters will do better sticking to the basics and learning the proper technique of the main exercises before adding variations (e.g., chains and bands).

Another adaptation with strength training is increased motor unit firing rates (rate coding), which determines how quickly your muscles can generate force when they contract. This improvement is linked to changes in neural drive, muscle fiber types, and how force is transmitted within the muscle.

Finally, as the lifter gains experience, increased muscularity will become more important. That said, recent research has challenged the idea that lifting heavy weights is the only way to make muscles grow. Working your muscles close to the point of failure, regardless of the weight lifted, can lead to muscle growth. This shift in our understanding suggests that momentary muscle failure is crucial for hypertrophy because it recruits all available muscle units, regardless of the load.
