I’ve been absent from social media these past couple weeks as I juggle moving into a new apartment and starting a new job while still coaching for JuggernautTraining. Unrelated but this is on top of dealing with an ear infection from a bad cold, so that’s been fun. I’m also still finding time to train as that’s important to me.

Anyway, this new position is in the field applied neuroscience as it applies to the performance of the elite athlete. Think about a quarterback who has milli-seconds to make an informative decision to pass the ball, or who to pass to. This split decision could change the entire outcome of the game. Can we train that, and is it measurable? The answer to both is yes.

Another example is an experienced versus novice powerlifter. When experienced lifters go for a 1RM, their brain state is probably quite different than that of a novice. They don’t consciously think as much, they just do (we know this as getting into the zone). I’m sure many of us have experienced that feeling right before. On the other hand, a less experienced lifter may be thinking of cues from their coach (this also makes me wonder if it’s an effective strategy for a coach to yell cues in the middle of a lift), maybe feels insecure about completing the lift, and likely experiencing a bit more hesitation. Could you imagine the consequences of a quarterback taking too long to make a decision?

Applied neuroscience is a newer field that we currently have rather limited, but very promising information on. There’s currently so much we don’t know YET which makes for an exciting opportunity to learn, and to share what I learn along the way. If you see me posting all things brains, now you know why😊Stay tuned!! #braingains
