“I’ve always wanted to work in Major Crimes. After being promoted to Senior Deputy, I worked as an investigator in Ojai. When a job opened up, I applied and was lucky enough to be assigned into my position.”

Meet Sr. Deputy James Douglas, 👋 a homicide detective with our Major Crimes Unit.

“In homicide, you are going to be working on a case for years. After a homicide occurs, those first 24-48 hours is when you have to put all your effort into a case because you have perishable evidence that exists somewhere. No matter the scale of that crime, it is so important to collect and secure that evidence as quickly as possible. Once it’s gone, you’re never ever getting it back. After those first 1-2 days, then you’re working to put all the pieces together – 1) to make sure that you can solve the crime; 2) to make sure you hold the right person accountable - the right suspect; and 3) you’re protecting the victim, the victim’s family, and making sure that they understand that justice is being sought for their loved one.

As a homicide detective, you have to have a commitment to tenacity, hard work and have a thick skin. In this unit, no matter where you go, you see a lot of trauma. You see people on their worst day – victims, suspects, and witnesses. You have to have a calm, even demeanor and a resolve to keep looking for all the facts no matter what trauma you encounter or kinds of experiences you have. It’s so important that you’re committed to collecting every piece of evidence and every single detail of each investigation because that’s how you gain the best picture of what happened.”
