## Caption

The Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike of 1968 played an important role in bringing national attention to the plight of underpaid Black Americans. 

Protesters marched wearing “I Am A Man” sandwich boards and signs, demanding that they be treated with dignity. 

The signs became a rallying cry for the strikers.
