## Caption

Humuhumuʻeleʻele, also known as the black triggerfish, is the cousin of the well-known state fish humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa and one of the most common fish found in coral reef ecosystems in Hawaiʻi. Triggerfish get their name from the sharp spine on their back that becomes erect when they're threatened. They can dart into a hole or crack in the lava reef and then “trigger” their spine to lock into place so they are impossible to pull backward out of the hole. In Hawaiʻi, the common name for these fish is “Hagi” and although most people don't think of them as good eating, they have sweet white meat that can actually be pretty tasty if prepared properly 🐠 . jesseyonover
