Do your kids know about the conflict in Ukraine? Are you trying to figure out if and how to talk to them about it?

Here are 4 basic principles to think through . . .

1️⃣ - Speak truthfully, but keep conversations age appropriate. Ask what they have already heard. From there will depend on both the age of the child and their emotional maturity. Teens likely have a lot of information, so take time to do your research as well and help them process their concerns. Very young children probably don't have any awareness and that's okay — they likely don't yet have capacity to understand.

2️⃣ - Consider a media break when younger kids are around. Constant stream of information is not good for anyone, and images of violence are hard for even adults to take in. Keep yourself informed while kids aren't around, and when they are — focus on quality time and creating connection and security for them.

3️⃣ - Remind them good still exists, and encourage them to do good. Mr. Roger's mother told him: "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." At times like these, we need to notice people who are helping and doing good and practice doing some good ourselves! Forego a family movie night or dinner out and donate to an organization working to ease the suffering in Ukraine. Attend or organize a prayer vigil for Ukraine and Russia. Do random acts of kindness for a neighbor or friend! Spreading kindness helps “overcome evil with good” (see Romans 12:21).

4️⃣ - Pray with them. Let your children see you relying on the Prince of Peace. Model for them how to take your worries, your burdens and fears, your concerns and heartache over a deeply divided world, and give them to God through prayer. And lead your kids in praying for those even 5,700 miles away.
