USMNT midfielder Gianluca Busio believes playing in relegation and promotion battles with Venezia helps him grow into a better player.

He moved from Sporting Kansas City in MLS to Italian side Venezia back in the 2021 summer.

“When I first moved here, going through that relegation, it helped me a lot. It helped me get to this point where I’m at now,” Busio told American Soccer Now in an interview.

“When I first moved, everybody talked about the main differences between relegation and promotion. But I moved right into it, it was kind of a shock.”

“I got the worst of it, the pain of the relegation. Now it’s the opposite. It helped me grow into where I can use what I learned to help us get promoted.”

The 21-year-old has 13 caps for the USMNT and played in two different Gold Cups. He’s very excited for this summer’s Paris Olympics.

“A lot of Americans grew up watching Olympics. I was watching every sport there,” he said.

“Once I heard we qualified, I was locked in. I wanted to push for a spot on the team.”

“My main priority now is in Venice, but as soon as the season is done, it’s not really offseason. It’s preparing for the Olympics.”

Venezia are currently third in Serie B with one point away from second and seven games to go. 

Busio has played 30 out of 31 league games.
