## Caption

In 1976, Stephanie “Penny” George, was the first woman of color to attend classes at St. Mark’s. The Southborough School for Girls was a thriving, progressive, and democratic educational boarding community that coordinated itself academically, artistically, and socially with St. Mark’s before being absorbed by the School’s coeducation efforts in the autumn of 1977. For more than thirty years, Ms. George was a teacher of and advocate for children with special needs in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
