Today we get to know #DornsifeTrojan Erin Tharp!

She is a senior majoring in environmental studies (uscenvironmentalstudies) with a minor in marine biology (uscbiosci). She tells us about her most memorable classes at USC and advice for students. Scroll for photos of her summer research 🤿 studying sea cucumbers at the USC Wrigley Marine Science Center, 🥾 hiking in L.A. and with her teammates on the 🤽‍♀️ USC women's water polo team. 🔗 Read more about her scientific research at the link in our bio.

🏡 Hometown: Newport Beach, CA

📚 A surprising academic experience: The class that surprised me most was Scott Applebaum’s marine biology class because we learned how to code using the R programming language. I struggled most weeks, but slowly got the hang of it. Learning how to code in R came in extremely handy as I used it to analyze my data this past summer for research on sea cucumbers through the National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates program at the uscwrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island.

❤️ Favorite class: Monalisa Chatterjee’s course "Environmental Ethics" (ENST 344). I had never thought much about the ethics behind our actions towards the earth and the intrinsic value of our environment before this class. Taking this course really made me view the world in a different way and have a much deeper appreciation and respect for the environment.

✍️ Advice to my pre-college self: Take every opportunity that is presented to you during your time at uscedu. The university has so many clubs, athletic teams and organizations. For example, one of my friends convinced me to take the environmental studies scientific diving course my freshman year and it led me to my path of doing marine research. So, every chance you can, just say yes!
