Today, we get to know #DornsifeTrojan Catie Cummings! Catie is a senior majoring in law, history and culture with a minor in business law. She tells us about her time at USC Dornsife, including her favorite international adventure and the nonprofit she co-founded with fellow Trojans to support Angelenos, a venture she honed in her #DornsifeToolkit course “Doing Good,” which teaches students how to launch and run a nonprofit. Plus, she shares 📸 of her dog Zeus 🐾 mugging on campus and around LA.

🌴 ☀️ L.A. love: My favorite thing about Los Angeles is the overwhelming sense of community – whether from the Trojan Family or in the mutual aid groups that I’ve become involved with since I co-founded the nonprofit waterdropla with fellow Trojans. Started in July 2020, we work to combat water insecurity by providing clean drinking water and other necessities to diverse communities across Southern California. In a short amount of time and in the middle of a global pandemic, the LA community has really rallied together to engage in mutual aid and community efforts, and I hope to see trend this continue.

📍🗺️ Life-changing travel: The summer between my sophomore and junior years I went on a solo trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, to volunteer and explore. This trip showed me what freedom could look like – I chose to take this trip instead of getting a high-stress internship in my field, and it taught me that sometimes, taking an unexpected chance can be so much more valuable than taking the traditional route.

🎥 Recommended GE: I took “Race, Class and Gender in American Film” (CTCS 192) to fulfill a general education requirement, but it ended up being one of the best classes I've taken because of the way it taught me to analyze and criticize popular films under a different lens. It helped me develop a whole new perspective in consuming media and popular culture, and despite being pretty far off from my traditional course work, helped strengthen my analytical skills in other areas beyond film.
