Today we’re turning a #SpotlightOn the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West!

The institute is a hub for scholarly investigation of the history and culture of California and the American West. Through sponsorship of innovative scholarship and research, ICW draws on the resources of the University of Southern California and The Huntington Library to build an innovative and unique collaboration between a research university and a research library. 

ICW’s work ranges from intensive training of doctoral students to outreach programs aimed at the high school students of greater Los Angeles. Innovative conferences, workshops, lecture series and other programs are designed to teach and learn from a growing public audience hungry for historical perspectives on the events and challenges of the contemporary American West. All of ICW’s work flows from the conviction that “history matters.”

Nov. 16: South to Freedom: Runaway Slaves to Mexico & the Road to the Civil War

💡 Did you know: ICW Director William Deverell recently worked as historical advisor on perrymasonhbo, helping the producers recreate the look and feel of Los Angeles in the 1930s.

Also, the institute’s Aerospace History Project was recently the basis of a four-part documentary series – Blue Sky Metropolis – which aired on KCET Television and won an EMMY award in July 2020.
