Today, the first-ever photograph of a black hole was released. Capturing the image required the efforts of hundreds of scientists around the world.

USC Dornsife physicist Nicholas Warner explains the image’s significance:

“When Antonie van Leeuwenhoek constructed and used the first microscopes he revealed a whole new universe, leading to the discovery of microbes and ultimately to the revolutionary understanding of everything from fermenting of wine to the propagation and treatment of diseases.
.
“Robert Hooke, an early pioneer of microscopy, wrote in the preface of Micrographia: ‘By the means of Telescopes, there is nothing so far distant but may be represented to our view; and by the help of Microscopes, there is nothing so small as to escape our inquiry; hence there is a new visible World discovered to the understanding.’
.
“The Event Horizon Telescope has not only given us a dramatic view of the cores of galaxies, it has given us the ability to see the detailed structures that underpin one of the most titanic phenomena in the universe.  The event horizon is now accessible as a testing ground for some of the most fundamental theories of nature.”
